Embrace the Journey of Wholeness: Discover the Power of the Whole Person Approach at Neighbors Counseling

Have you ever reflected on what therapy really offers? It’s not just a conversation; it’s a dedicated space where you can unpack your past and discover a more balanced and meaningful future. According to the Texas Code of License Professionals, a therapist is a trained and licensed mental health professional who provides therapeutic services to individuals, couples, families, or groups. Their primary role is to assist clients in understanding and addressing emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues. Therapists employ various techniques and approaches tailored to the unique needs of each client, aiming to promote mental wellness and personal growth.

At Neighbors Counseling, we view the journey of therapy as a pathway to wholeness, with the goal of helping you thrive, even when faced with difficulties. This belief is supported by extensive research and ethical practices in mental health.

Understanding the Whole Person Approach

The Whole Person Approach is an all-encompassing method that acknowledges how the mind, body, and relationships are connected. This approach is not novel, innovative, or new but a centering in a common sense understanding that each person is unique, with their own set of experiences, emotions, and needs. Unlike some traditional therapy, it strives to avoid compartmentalizing a person's life. For instance, consider someone dealing with anxiety due to work stress who may also be experiencing physical symptoms like headaches and social problems like isolation. A Whole Person Approach would take both the mental, physical and relational health of that person into account for a more effective treatment plan.

Therapists using this method can customize their strategies to align with each individual's needs. This collaborative process allows clients to actively participate in their own healing journey.

Understanding Stress, Symptoms and Trauma as apart of Human Condition

The reality is that all of us, as part of the human condition, are vulnerable to adversity and experience stress. While most adults—over 70%—have experienced a traumatic event in their lives, this doesn't imply a PTSD diagnosis for everyone. Instead, it highlights that stress and trauma are common human experiences. For many, life circumstances like poverty, difficult parenting, challenges in childhood development, or managing ongoing health concerns amplify that stress. We see your symptoms—anxiety, sadness, or irritability—not as personal failures, but as understandable human responses to these experiences.

We believe the "why" behind your struggles is trauma-informed, guiding us to explore your diagnosis as a humanistic way to organize symptoms and understand their impact on your day-to-day functionality. It’s a conversation that honors your story while providing an established and scientific framework for growth.

Functional Mental Health

To achieve real, lasting wholeness, we use a balanced approach that addresses every part of you. We believe that true change happens by blending two core approaches in a process called assimilation. This flexible, relationship-driven method ensures your treatment is tailored to your unique needs. It does have a unintended side effect that is is a balance of science and creativity which sometimes takes time and is not always clear. However each therapist and provider is striving towards building a foundation to adapt and modify interventions.

  • Top-Down Methods focus on your cognition and behavioral change. These approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy, are backed by decades of research from organizations like the American Psychological Association (APA) for their effectiveness in treating a wide range of mental health conditions (APA, 2015). They empower you to reframe negative thoughts and develop practical coping skills. This is about taking conscious control and making deliberate choices to build a better future.

  • Bottom-Up Methods address the body and unconscious emotions. These approaches are crucial because trauma is not just a cognitive experience but is also encoded in the body's nervous system (van der Kolk, 2014). Through Somatic Therapy or Psychodynamic oriented approaches, we work directly with your body’s wisdom and/or emotional memory to process the burdens of the past. This allows for a deep sense of calm and safety from the inside out.

The Therapeutic Relationship and Our Team Approach

The foundation of our work is a dynamic and collaborative relationship between you and your therapist. This partnership is the most crucial element in achieving positive outcomes, with research showing it's more impactful than the specific techniques used (Lambert, 1992).

We see your therapist as more than just a provider; they are a partner in your journey. They continually deepen their understanding of symptoms and interventions through their interactions with you and their own professional development. We believe in this reciprocal process, which is guided by essential qualities like communication, empathy, reasoning, curiosity, and authenticity. These traits are vital to the collaborative approach we take in every session.

Ultimately the therapeutic relationship is at the core of treatment as the Lambert study provides evidence to validate. It's the process that makes changes not the content.
