TMS Clinical Solutions

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. TMS is most commonly used to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and may also be used to treat certain other mental health conditions, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

TMS may be considered for individuals who have not experienced adequate improvement with other treatments, including medication and psychotherapy. Whether TMS is appropriate depends on an individual’s diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, and other clinical factors. A qualified provider can determine whether TMS may be an appropriate treatment option.

A typical course of TMS consists of treatments administered several times per week over approximately 6–8 weeks. The exact length and frequency of treatment may vary depending on the individual’s treatment plan and response.

Unlike treatments that require sedation or anesthesia, TMS is generally performed while the patient is awake and alert. Most patients are able to drive and return to their usual activities after a treatment session. Some individuals may experience temporary side effects, such as scalp discomfort, pressure, or a tapping sensation during treatment. These sensations often become more manageable as patients become accustomed to the treatment.

Response to TMS varies from person to person. Some patients may begin noticing changes in their symptoms within the first few weeks, while others may require a longer course of treatment before experiencing improvement. Treatment progress is monitored throughout the process by the clinical team.

Steps to Getting Started

Duration: 15–20 Minutes

The first step is a complimentary phone consultation with a Patient Advocate. The purpose of this call is to provide information about TMS and determine the appropriate next steps.

During the consultation, the Patient Advocate can discuss:

  • General qualifications for TMS therapy

  • Insurance benefits and coverage

  • The TMS treatment process

  • Scheduling an evaluation with a provider

The consultation also provides an opportunity to ask questions about the treatment and what to expect.

Meet With a TMS Provider

Duration: 60 Minutes

The next step is an evaluation with a qualified TMS provider. During this appointment, the provider will review your medical history, current symptoms, previous treatment history, and other relevant clinical information.

Based on the evaluation, the provider will determine whether TMS is an appropriate treatment option. If TMS is recommended, the provider will develop an individualized treatment plan.

Any required insurance authorization will be completed before treatment begins.

Start Treatment: Your First Appointment

Duration: 60 Minutes

Once treatment has been approved and scheduled, the first TMS appointment will typically include a process known as “mapping.”

During mapping, the TMS technician identifies the appropriate position for the treatment device and determines the treatment settings based on the patient’s individual needs. These settings help guide the delivery of magnetic pulses during subsequent treatment sessions.

Continue With TMS Treatment

Duration: 20–30 Minutes

Following the initial mapping appointment, patients begin their regular TMS treatment sessions. Treatment is commonly provided Monday through Friday for approximately 6–8 weeks, although the schedule may vary depending on the individual treatment plan.

During each session, the TMS device delivers targeted magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain. Patients remain awake and seated throughout the procedure.

Depending on the treatment setting, patients may be able to relax, watch television, or listen to music or a podcast during their session.

TMS typically does not require a recovery period. Most patients are able to drive and resume their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

Throughout the course of treatment, the clinical team will monitor the patient’s progress and response to therapy.
