Is Therapy a Journey?

Have you ever wondered what the journey of therapy is truly about? It's more than just talking; it's a dedicated processing space where you can work through your past and build a future that feels balanced and meaningful. At Neighbors Counseling, we see this journey as a path to wholeness and functional balance, with the ultimate goal of helping you move from simply surviving to actively thriving, even in the face of symptoms and adversity. This philosophy is grounded in a vast body of scientific evidence and ethical practice.

Understanding Stress, Symptoms and Trauma as a part of Human Condition

The reality is that all of us, as part of the human condition, are vulnerable to adversity and experience stress. While most adults—over 70%—have experienced a traumatic event in their lives, this doesn't imply a PTSD diagnosis for everyone. Instead, it highlights that stress and trauma are common human experiences. For many, life circumstances like poverty, difficult parenting, challenges in childhood development, or managing ongoing health concerns amplify that stress. We see your symptoms—anxiety, sadness, or irritability—not as personal failures, but as understandable human responses to these experiences.

We believe the "why" behind your struggles is trauma-informed, guiding us to explore your diagnosis as a humanistic way to organize symptoms and understand their impact on your day-to-day functionality. It’s a conversation that honors your story while providing an established and scientific framework for growth.

Functional Mental Health

To achieve real, lasting wholeness, we use a balanced approach that addresses every part of you. We believe that true healing happens by blending two core approaches in a process called therapy assimilation. This flexible, relationship-driven method ensures your treatment is tailored to your unique needs.

  • Top-Down Methods focus on your cognition and behavioral change. These approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy, are backed by decades of research from organizations like the American Psychological Association (APA) for their effectiveness in treating a wide range of mental health conditions (APA, 2015). They empower you to reframe negative thoughts and develop practical coping skills. This is about taking conscious control and making deliberate choices to build a better future.

  • Bottom-Up Methods address the body and unconscious. These approaches are crucial because trauma is not just a cognitive experience but is also encoded in the body's nervous system (van der Kolk, 2014). Through Somatic Therapy and Psychodynamic approaches, we work directly with your body’s wisdom and emotional memory to process the burdens of past trauma. This allows for a deep sense of calm and safety from the inside out. For this reason we provide psychiatric services to include Spravato esketamine treatment through most major insurances.

The Therapeutic Relationship and Our Team Approach

The foundation of our work is a dynamic and collaborative relationship between you and your therapist. This partnership is the most crucial element in achieving positive outcomes, with research showing it's more than the specific techniques used (Lambert, 1992).

We see your therapist as more than just a provider; they are a partner in your journey. They continually deepen their understanding of symptoms and interventions through their interactions with you and their own professional development. We believe in this reciprocal process, which is guided by essential qualities like communication, empathy, reasoning, curiosity, and authenticity. These traits are vital to the collaborative approach we take in every session.
